Coercion may get a student to comply.
The teacher.. principal, you know.. they get what they want. In the short term they get obedience.
You know, but educators should be asking themselves, is that the goal?
A student who has been forced to comply did not think.. did not reason within himself to choose that behavior, and therefore will not choose that behavior in another setting if there is nothing forcing him to comply.
On the longer run he has learned nothing. At best he will only comply each time out of fear of punishment, and that is nothing to be proud of in a democratic society. You know, a person who makes quick decisions out of fear cannot make make use of his higher human abilities when the situation calls for him to do so.
He will hold back; he will run; be quiet as a mouse instead of leading boldly.
So you know.. the compassionate way is always the best way; take s a lot of patience and a lot of love. And the educator has to be very sure of who he is and be very confident, and umm.. many times has to heal himself first.
Thankfully, what happens instead in most situations when a student is forced to comply, is that he only complies in that instance when he is forced to do so…and doesn’t use trauma as fodder for his future decision-making.
